Employee Profile – Matthew Shurvin
Matthew Shurvin, Intermediate Environmental Technician with AET spends most of his workday helping a community affected by vapour intrusion caused by contaminated groundwater. This mitigation project includes working with a team that monitors and maintains a groundwater extraction systems (GES), and several air mitigation systems around a community in Cambridge, Ontario. This monitoring program involves a lot of field work including the sampling of water from the GES, groundwater and surface water, and monitoring of residential indoor air and mitigation equipment.
Since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, all non-essential staff are working from home, but not all jobs can be done at home. Matthew, along with his co-workers at AET, are taking extra precautions in the field to ensure, not only their safety, but the safety of the people around them. This includes increased use of PPE and practicing physical distancing measures.
The current situation has created some unique challenges for AET, which includes limiting services and field staff as well as delaying/rescheduling field activities. Despite these challenging times, Matthew says he feels safe due to the proper planning, preparation, and communication from his managers as well as the company leadership.
Matt’s dedication and commitment to the project ensures that the mitigation equipment continues to operate which ensures the ongoing protection of the community. I thank Matt for constantly adapting to new challenges and balancing COVID-19 safety measures with field work!
During these unprecedented times, I continue to focus on my job and my role within this community. I am personally very thankful and proud to be able to work and do my part as a member of AET.
