Waste Team Lead
AET Group is currently seeking an experienced Waste Team Lead to join our team and quickly step into a leadership position. This is a full-time, permanent role.
AET Group is a multi-disciplinary environmental consulting, auditing and scientific services company providing professional services to the built and natural environments in the following core service areas: air, compliance, building sciences, mitigation, GHG, waste, sustainability, audits, water, management systems, home flood protection and energy. Headquartered in Kitchener Ontario, AET provides services across Canada and the United States. AET is looking for dedicated, skilled, and knowledgeable people to complement our current team.
This position reports directly to the Waste Audit Manager and works closely with Manager of Waste Analytics and Development, Project Managers and the Waste Team, to ensure safe and efficient waste studies. The successful candidate won’t shy away from hard work and is excited for the opportunity to travel, both within the province, and across Canada. The successful candidate must be available to travel regularly for conducting audits. The travel will require overnight stays for 1–3-week periods.
You will have the opportunity to contribute to our growth, working on diverse waste projects across Canada, including municipal and ICI waste studies and reduction strategies, material recovery facility commissioning, optimization and quality studies, litter studies, food waste studies, EPR and Circular Economy, and waste reduction planning.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Lead and conduct waste studies (~85% of time) including:
- Project planning (e.g., assembling field log sheets, equipment, supplies, communicating with the project manager & audit team)
- Lead waste sample collection (e.g., curbside residential waste collection, landfill waste collection, recycling collection), and sample sorting to characterize and determine garbage, recycling, and organic composition by material type.
- Assess current waste trends and identify opportunities for waste reduction or diversion.
- Responsible for carrying out work with accordance to project specifications and prescribed methodologies.
- Work safely by following all health & safety protocols, including proper use of personal protective equipment.
- Support Project Lead with data entry, analysis & report writing (~10% of time).
- Administrative & Communication, and other duties from time to time (~5% of time).
Qualifications:
- 1-2 years’ experience conducting waste audits is a requirement, and experience leading waste audit teams is an asset.
- Degree or Diploma in Environmental Studies or related field with an interest in waste management is preferred.
- Driver’s license with clean driver’s abstract, access to a vehicle; comfortable driving pickup truck and pulling a cargo trailer is required.
- Must possess excellent oral, written, organizational and multitasking skills.
- Ability to work well in a team setting; experience leading a team is an asset.
- Ability to work under pressure and tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Must be punctual and dependable with a professional demeanor.
- Possess initiative, adaptability, flexibility, and a willingness to learn.
- MS Excel and MS Word knowledge and use is preferred.

Physical Capabilities:
- Regularly required to sit, stand, walk.
- Able to lift 20 kg.
- Regularly required to work outside in varying weather conditions.
- AET provides half-mask respirators/masks, safety glasses, gloves, hard hats, coveralls, and reflective vests. Safety footwear is to be provided by the candidate.
